Llanwrtyd Wells is the smallest town in Britain with the cleanest air, and nestles on the river Irfon, surrounded by the breathtaking Epynt & Cambrian Mountains in the heart of Wales.
Llanwrtyd Wells was once a spa town following the discovery of waters with amazing healing properties in 1732, by the Rev. Theophilus Evans. The wells were referred to as "Ffynnon Ddrewllyd" or Stinking Well because of the smell of hydrogen sulphide gas that was given off when you breathed the vapours.
Spa fashion reached its peak in the Victorian era and many of the hotels in Llanwrtyd Wells date back to these times. The Belle Vue Hotel was built in 1843 and is the only purpose built hotel in Llanwrtyd Wells. Our hotel has retained its old world charm and character with original features like the open fireplace made from original river stone.
For the outdoor type Llanwrtyd Wells is fantastic for walking, mountain biking, fishing or bird watching. For the less strenuous and for those who simply want to get away from it all to the peace and quiet and clean air there are miles of unspoilt scenery, rolling hills and rivers to enjoy. If even that is too much energy just relax in the friendly, family, homely atmosphere of the bar by the open fire with a book or outside in the patio area.
